Health & safety
Safety is the top priority in all our operations. Our goal is to drive injuries, occupational illnesses and operational incidents as close to zero as possible and to strive for a work environment where ‘Nobody Gets Hurt’.
We know that our operations involve potential risks but these risks can be substantially reduced if managed properly. That's why we spend considerable time, effort and money on recognising and eliminating hazards before they lead to an accident - and our investment has been rewarded.
We place particular emphasis on changing peoples’ behaviour to improve safety. This approach is designed to ensure that everybody takes responsibility for their own and others’ safety, whether on site at work, when driving or in leisure time away from work.
An initiative that introduced consistently high standards of safety at nearly 400 Esso service stations operated by ROC (Retail Operating Company) in the UK has helped to change behaviours and cut accident rates. The ROC UK Safety In Action programme was recognised by Forecourt Trader magazine in 2009, when it was named the Best Oil Company Initiative.
All staff and contractors are encouraged to speak up and intervene if they see a potentially unsafe situation developing. Motorists working for ExxonMobil in the UK must complete a video-based driver safety course, which encourages best practice in terms of defensive driving, observation and care of the vehicle, while those who drive frequently on business must complete behind-the-wheel training designed to reinforce safer day-to-day driving.
Our strong safety record has been recognised by, amongst others, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the British Safety Council, and the Chemical Industries Association.
In 2009, there was only one recorded lost-time injury (LTI) throughout the entire UK workforce of some 7,600 employees and 1,600 contractors. An LTI is when work days are lost due to a job-related injury or illness and is an important measure of workplace safety.
We are pleased to report that our approach to occupational health and safety conforms to the OHSAS 18001 international occupational health and safety management system specification.
