ExxonMobil has a long-standing tradition of investing in the community. Worldwide, ExxonMobil contributed $139 million to charities and institutions in 2006. Wherever we do business, we put our energies into improving the quality of life of our neighbours and their communities. We have always considered this an important part of our responsibility as a good corporate citizen.
In the UK last year we invested nearly £2 million on community projects and initiatives. We give special focus to supporting the neighbourhoods around our key business locations.
By listening to our neighbours and responding to their ideas our community programme is based on what local people need and want.
As a result we have focussed our efforts on initiatives that make a real difference, particularly in the fields of education, the environment and volunteering.
In education we actively support the teaching of science, maths, technology and environmental education in schools through the ExxonMobil Link Schools programme. We also sponsor a number of programmes that encourage the highest standards of engineering teaching in universities.
Our environmental programmes encourage the involvement of local people in activities aimed at improving their immediate environment, specifically by promoting energy efficiency in the home.
Our employees and their families help too. Our volunteer involvement programme, known as the VIP scheme, gives employees and their families added motivation to contribute their personal time, skills and energy to help make our community initiatives a reality.
